Sunshine Beaches

Morocco has over 3,500km of coastline along the Atlantic and Mediterranean.

There are plenty of resorts located along the beaches offering a multitude of water sports activities.

Two of the most popular resorts are Essaouira, known as “surfers’ paradise” and Agadir,

with 10km of it's own beach Agadir is the perfect destination for families who want to relax or explore

the diversity of the regions close by...

Essaouira

essaouira.jpg

Protected by the tradewinds and surrounded by flowers, Essaouira “la Blanche” is the centre of the cabinet -

makers’ craft. Master craftsmen produce delicate marquetery in lemon, cedar and sandalwood, preserving

the character and aroma of these fine woods.

NOT TO BE MISSED

THE HARBOR

Essentially dedicated to fishing, it is one of the liveliest area of the town, especially during the return of the boats.

Fish are sold by auction. Do not miss this spectacle. Enter the harbor by the customs post located at the top

of the beach or by the ‘Madne’ door. Wharfs are transformed from old naval yards.

You will see there wooden boats under construction as you will never see anywhere else.

Their shapes evoke ancient times.

THE DOOR OF THE MARINE

Built in the year 1184 in order to join the town to the harbor, it was constructed by an English renegade.

It is decorated with two columns of a classical triangular pediment. A staircase allows you to get to the top

of the harbor Skala defensive wall. Very lovely view on the beach and on the ‘purpuraires’ islands.

Cannons are decorated of Portuguese, Spanish and Flemish armories. It is in this astonishing scenery

that Orson Welles filmed some scenes for the Othello movie

THE SKALA

Enter through the door of the Marine, walk toward Moulay El-Hassan square and turn left on the Casbah street

which borders the ramparts. You must go under the arch in order to discover,

in the former warehouses of munitions, craftmens’ workshops. Their works are in thuja wood,

inlaid of citrus wood, ebony and sometimes of copper wire. Try to go up by the rail which conducts

to the 200 meter platform, protected from the ocean by a crenellated wall constructed with blocks of sawn rocks.

From the top, you can see the saw traces and the hole, vestige of the maneuver which was used to move these rocks.

Lovely collection of bronze cannons pointed at the ocean.

Rabat

rabat.jpg

There is blue everywhere. The intense blue of the sky and the sea, nestling within the protection

of the ochre-coloured ramparts, a gleaming white city and a minaret (tower) that reaches up to touch

the clouds: this is Rabat, the capital of Morocco.

Rabat has a long history as a capital city. In the XIIth century, Yacoub el-Mansour, the great Almohad conqueror

chose it to be the symbol of his splendour. But history had already been made at Rabat.

The Merinides (XIIIth and XIVth century) honoured the city by making it the site of the Chellah necropolis,

building on the ruins of the ancient Roman town of Salé.

History has left its mark upon Rabat, and Rabat honours those who made it. As Yacoub el-Mansour is honoured

with the Hassan tower, dominating what should have been one of the greatest mosques in the Muslim world

, or the mausoleum of the late King Mohammed V, architect of Moroccan independence in 1956 and the imposing

Royal Palace, residence of the king and seat of the government since 1912.

NOT TO BE MISSED

THE CASBAH OF THE OUDAYA

History stops in Rabat and does not leave. It appears on the corner of an alley,

in a stall of oriental slippers and poufs fragrant with the scent of leather, in a carpet auction.

It impregnates every stone of the Oudaya Casbah, fortress of indomitable Andalous Corsairs of XVII century.

Nothing is more pleasurable than imagining their exciting lives, delightfully installed at the Moorish coffee,

savouring gazelle horns (Moroccan cake) with a mint tea, looking at the boats which dance in the Bou Regreg

river at the bottom of the Salé city ramparts.

THE KING MOHAMMED V MAUSOLEUM

Here, everything is luxury and sophistication. The traditional Moroccan art is put on exhibit :

under a gilt cupola made of mahogany and Lebanon cedar, arises the Royal sarcophagus of Pakistani white onyx (marble).

THE NECROPOLIS OF CHELLAH

Situated on the site of the ancient city of Salé, the Necropolis is located 2 km from the city center.

Passing through the lovely door, you will discover a site overtaken by an exuberant vegetation.

You can distinguish tombs and a stone basin where there are fish and sacred turtles. It was fed by a miraculous source

where, according to legend, a golden fish lived. Further on, a minaret has partly maintained its multicolored decoration -

It is occupied now by storks.
