Situated on a promontory on the northern coast east of the island, Portoferraio, principle centre of the port of Elba, is circled by imposing fortifications of the '500s, with its quay port, offers a comfortable landing for boats of any size, also, Portoferraio propones a cultural itinerary of notable interest: the Palazzina dei Mulini and the Villa di San Martino, residences of Napoleon, the Church of the Misericordia, the Church of the Sacramento, the Mura Medicee, the archeological ruins of the Villa Romana delle Grotte, the Romanica Church of Santo Stefano and the Fortress of San Martino. Viareggio
Viareggio can surely be considered the seaside establishment mostly renowned of Versilia.
Already by the first of the '900s there were numerous seaside establishments and hotels in tuscany, making the small city famous even abroad. Sport and entertainment: for sports, infinite are the choices; sailing, windsurf, horse back riding, skating, mini golf and bocce. Viareggio is the Rimini of Versilia: night clubs, discos, restaurants, bars, cafè, pizzerias, ice cream shops. Florence, Siena, Lucca, Pisa, Torre del Lago and the house of Puccini are interesting excursions. The Opera Festival is held during the summer and the colourful Carnival parade attracts visitors in winter. The Carnival of Viareggio is a manifestation of strong attraction (February and March). While during the summer the Premio Letterario (literary award) takes place and at Torre del Lago, at 6 kilometers, the 'Pucciniana' lyric season begins. Beaches: ample seashore of fine sand.
