Thessaloniki, Greece's second city, is far less touristy than the capital. However few would deny it is equally

fascinating. With just under a million inhabitants it combines effortless sophistication with the intimacy

of a small town. Located on an attractive bay on the Thermaic Gulf and packed with historical, social,

cultural and culinary interest, Thessalonoki leaves few uncharmed.

Although the city takes its name from the daughter of a Macedonian general, its period of greatest glory came

after the Roman emperor Galerius made it the capital of the eastern empire. Later it became the second city

of the Byzantine Empire, and the magnificent rulers adorned the city with splendid churches and palaces,

many of which survived later Ottoman domination. The city’s blackest day came in a disastrous fire

in 1917 which destroyed most of the oldest districts. Start at the beginning and go to the Arch of Galerius

and the Roman agora where excavations are currently unveiling the ancient city. Then take a stroll to some

of the glorious Byzantine churches.

The fifth century church of Agios Dimitrios is the largest in Greece and the vast interior holds some

wonderful Byzantine mosaics. The Church of Agia Sophia is less famous than its celebrated namesake

but is equally lovely. A visit to the archeological museum is definitely advisable. It houses the amazing contents

of the tomb of Phillip II of Macedon, the father of Alexander the Great.

Thessaloniki, Greece Be sure to climb up to the White Tower, the city's most famous landmark.

It was used as a prison by the sultans and was the scene of a notorious massacre.

Thankfully its function today is altogether more pleasant,

as it houses a fabulous Byzantine Museum. The entry is free

INDEX

Athens the capitol of greece a vibrant busy city full of back streets that show the real city most people head for the Plaka and the steep climb to the Acropolis to see the views over the city and take in the atmosphere of an ancient city. Athens is also a lively city at night, with always something going on - even in winter when the "Locals" come home

from working in the islands

HAKIDIKI

  • Sithonia is the most beautiful unspoiled area in Halkidiki. The best way to visit this area is by car.
  • There are numerous traditional villages and also many secluded beaches where the water is crystal clear.
  • It is a very relaxing way to enjoy the sheer beauty of Halkidiki.
  • Mt Athos is the most spectacular place in the area. It is the third peninsula of Halkidiki.
  • There are more than 20 monasteries where even today 1700 monks are based.
  • The monasteries are well preserved and can only be seen from the sea by boat
  • Afitos Beach is found 1 km from the village centre, down a steep hill. Sunbathe on the white,
  • sandy beach on the left hand side of the beach. Situated in a small bay, with boats moored in deeper waters,
  • sun beds and umbrellas are available. Enjoy a meal at one of the two nearby tavernas and watch the locals
  • mending their fishing nets whilst discussing village gossip.
  • Kryopigi Beach is roughly a 30 minutes walk down a steep, windy road from the village.
  • This beach is definitely away from it all. On the left is a quiet, fine, shingle beach with
  • beautiful clear waters backed by pine trees.
  • Hanioti Beach - This is a long golden beach offering a variety of water sports.
  • Plenty of sun beds and umbrellas are for hire. Refreshments are available along the beach.
  • With beautiful views across to the Sithonia peninsular the beach is very popular for tourists but also for
  • Greek locals!
