  Ionian Islands

To the west of Epirus, Sterea Ellada, and the Peloponese, lies the group of islands, the Ionian islands. With historical significance is ITHACA a natural beauty only discovered by the few, who come back again & again.

(So don't tell every one...)

Corfu town Corfu (Keri) is the most popular of them all. It is a very green island and architecturally a mixture of the civilisations that have passed through at various times. The town impresses and charms the visitor with its two forts, narrow streets, tall houses, arcades, Venetian built Town Hall, church to Saint Spyridon the island's patron saint, flower-filled gardens and balconies with their superb wrought-iron fences.
Flooded with sights, Corfu is a small paradise on earth. From Paleokastritsa to Kanoni, from the Achillion to Pontikonisi and the northern coast, one will find crystal clear water, scenic coves, greenery and vegetation that 'sinks' into the deep blue sea. On this cosmopolitan island it is easy to combine relaxation with intense night life. Corfu

Paxos Paxos is an incredible microcosm. A verdant sanctuary for peace and quiet. With impressive white boulders and beautiful beaches with clear water, small coves, and sea caves, Gaios is the picturesque village with pretty houses and narrow streets. The old windmill, the Venetian fort and the Ipapanti sea cave are the sights to see on the island before one crosses over to Parga or to Anti paxos. A quiet island just made for truly relaxing holidays, Antipaxos has some wonderful beaches and a tiny village.
Lefkada - Porto Katsiki Lefkada's eastern side has dense vegetation and smooth shores. On the west, the coast is steep though there are many long sandy beaches. But all around the sea is that deep blue. Lefkada is a distinguished island with its impressive Venetian castle and the monastery of Phaneromeni. The capital town is a picturesque and quiet place with its characteristic multi-coloured wooden houses. Villages built next to the sea. Excursions through the forests to the many sights, such as the ruins of the western pebbled shores lapped by the crystal clear sea. Lefkada

Zakinthos ( Zante )

Want a getaway spot where you're truly away-from-it-all but with some of the hottest nightspots in the Greek Islands close at hand? Perhaps a wedding in Zakinthos? Holidays in Zakynthos have got your wish list needs all  in one. Sun-drenched days in secluded coves move on to nights in clubs and bars spilling sounds from 70's disco tunes

to dance music clubs well into the night. Or just head for days that are packed with seaside adventure and evenings are a low-key affair filled with intimate dinners and quiet cocktails. Whatever you're looking for, summer holidays in Zakynthos are the best of both worlds.

Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian islands. Green rocks plunge suddenly into the deep blue waters. Kefalonia has picturesque villages and small beautiful towns highlighted by small mansions and 'humble' farmhouses: a little further over, the ruins of some ancient city.

Sami is also worth a look it is the main port for Ithaca

Kefalonia - Makris Gialos
Kefalonia -Assos Kefalonia has been justly called the island of contrasts: Roman, Venetian, and Byzantine ruins, side by side with famous beaches. The capital Argostoli is where the sea pours into spectacular swallow-holes and disappears endlessly into subterranean tunnels forming a rare geological phenomenon. The water reappears at Lake Melissani, an incredible semi-underground lake of clear turquoise and indigo water. Nearby is the Drogarati cave, near SAMI Port, a large stalagmite cavern of rare beauty. To the north is the small village of Fiskardo, and its pretty harbour, that has escaped the earthquakes and retains the old style buildings. Ihaki - Vathi

Ithaki or Ithaca (See below)is probably one of the most legendary Greek islands as it is the home of Odysseus and Homer's Odyssey. It lies just a few miles from Kefalonia and can only be reached by boat. The island's locals live life at a leisurely pace and the traditional village atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Ithaca remains unspoiled and is scattered with tiny fishing villages, ancient monasteries and deserted beaches.
Vathy is the largest village of Ithaca as well as the capital and main harbour of the island (since the 16th century). It is a picturesque village, built around a deep and sheltered bay with a narrow entrance.

ITHACA FRIKES

Photo The picturesque village of Frikes is built on a valley, 13 km northwest of the island's capital.

The beauty of the village and the beach make this area a popular resort, during the summer.

The Penelope Restaurant is worth a visit. iNFORMATION ABOUT HOTELS IN FRIKES

ITHACA KIONI

Photo

The traditional preserved settlement of Kioni is situated 24 km north of the island's capital.

The houses are built in a traditional Ionian style; a number of them survived the earthquake which shook the

Ionian Islands in 1953.

Kioni is probably the most beautiful village in Ithaki. One should visit the lovely churches of Agios Ioanis Lambadiaris,

Evaggelistria and Agios Nikolaos, at Mavronas, a few kilometers from Kioni. In the last few years,

Kioni has become one of the most crowded, touristic resorts on the island but thankfully only July & August,

when "Traffic" is band, between 19:00 & Midnight. AND they say Superwoman has been spotted here!
ITHACA STAVROS

Photo

My favourite place is...

Stavros is a large village of 750 inhabitants, built on the northern part of the island,

16 km away from the capital. In the centre of the village, the church of Sotiras is most visible while

before it, the lovely square that attracts all the inhabitants.(and an occassional coach...)

It is believed that the ancient city of Ithaki and Ulysses's palace once stood here,

a fact confirmed by the area's archaeological findings.

On the location of Pilikata, one kilometer away from the village, one can see the ruins of the ancient settlement.

The area's archaeological findings are exhibited in a small collection. Near Stavros, in the Loizos Cave,

several excavations have shed light upon ancient relics such as certain ceramics, tripods and the ruins of a temple.
VATHI ITHACA

THE CAPITOL OF ITHAKI VATHI

Vathi, Ithaki's 'capital', is built on the southeastern part of the island,

in a quiet but occassionally breezy bay.

Homer testifies that this is the location of the ancient city of Phorkys.

After the earthquake in 1953 which shocked the Ionian Islands, the town of Vathi suffered severe damage and

the locals were obliged to rebuilt it. They have managed to maintain the Greek/Italian traditional look.

The main agency is Polyctor Tours in the square. Vicky works there and speaks excellent English

The famous restaurant called Gregory's taverna has an excellent Chef & Family team.

There are too many good restaurants to choose around the square but the Porto is very friendly.

At the far side of the bay is the 'Windmill' where they have the best Crepe flipper - but the music is better next door...

All Ithaca restaurants are well frequented by Italians & Greeks on holiday (Mainly around August...)

This is when the couple of bars can go on all night but most of the the rest of the summer is of quiet evening sitting outside

eating and drinking in the view of Vathi harbour. There are also local village feats, very well worth seeing.

The most significant sight-seeing in the town are the metropolis, with the lovely wood-carved icon-stand,

the small archaeological museum, the library and Odysseus Handouts' house. In the port,

there is the beautiful islet of Lazareto, with the small church of Stavros

There are reliable, well run Ferries from Sami
