The US State Department is now probably introducing a range of

new passport rules and security measures from October 2006,

which will have an impact on all customers flying into the USA.

In particular, the new legislation requires that all travellers, including children and babies, from 27 countries

(including the UK) who are part of the visa waiver scheme should now have a “machine readable” passport.
These passports feature two lines of coded data at the bottom of the photo page that can be swiped at check-in.

If passengers do not have this type of passport then they must go through the time consuming visa application process.

Jim Forster, British Airways’ government and industry affairs manager, said:

“We hope that as the UK has been issuing machine readable passports for the past 10 years that most of ou

r UK based customers will be okay. However we believe that many families may fall foul of the new rules as

the children have traditionally been placed on their parents’ passports rather than having their own.
There may also be problems with some UK passports which have been issued at overseas embassies.
We also have concerns about some European countries which have not been issuing machine readable passports

for very long and the impact it may have on those customers who fly to America from mainland Europe via London.
We are strongly recommending that all of our customers check their passports if they are flying to the US

and make sure they either get the appropriate visa or a machine readable passport...

IMPORTANT NOTE: From 04 Oct 2005, the US Government legislation will require all passengers entering the US to provide the following data prior to check-in or at check-in for their flights.
Passport number
Country which issued passport
Passport expiry date
Given names (as they appear on passport)
Last name
Gender
Date of birth
Citizenship

All non-US citizens will also be required to provide a full destination address including zip code

or cruise ship and port of embarkation.Transit pax must give onwards flight details.
Failure to this may result in check-in being denied. For most passengers, the destination address is where they will be staying on arrival in the US for the duration of their stay, or on their first night. This information must be collected from every passenger travelling to the USA before their flight departs.
The airlines involved are working to permit this facility as part of their website online check-in procedures which can normally be performed 24 hours prior to departure.
