CAR RENTAL:If you're one of the many travelers who will be renting a car this summer, be sure to check the rental company's payment and renter age policies. Virtually all car rental companies require that the renter be at least 21 years of age and have a major credit card. Some car companies will make exceptions to the minimum age requirement for an additional fee, and there are companies that will allow the renter to provide a cash deposit

in lieu of a credit card. Both of these exceptions require advance notice and additional paperwork.

Car rental companies have historically required the presentation of a major credit card at the time of rental.

That doesn't necessarily mean that the credit card must be used as the final form of payment, but it is required to secure the reservation.

Debit cards are not accepted to secure most car rental reservations. These types of cards can normally be used for final payment, but not for the initial rental. To check your car rental company's specific credit card policy, it's a good idea to go to their website and read their credit card policy. It would be advisable to print the policy and take it with you when you rent the car. If there is a discrepancy between their written, posted policy and what you are told at the rental counter, you will have the policy with you for verification.

As with any travel component, do your research before you head out. Rather than be disappointed or worse yet, stranded without a car, know before you go.
